What is a piston caliper?

2024-03-07

Piston calipers are an important component of the automotive braking system, mainly responsible for gripping the brake pads and producing braking effects. The more pistons there are in the piston caliper, the greater, more stable, and smoother the braking force. The piston caliper can be easily identified by its appearance, and there are several circular protrusions on the caliper, which are the pistons. It should be noted that the pistons of brake calipers are symmetrical on both sides, so the total number of pistons can be obtained by counting the number of pistons on one side. For example, two, four, six, and eight piston calipers correspond to two, four, six, and eight hydraulic pistons respectively. In theory, the more pistons there are in the brake caliper, the greater the braking force generated. However, it is necessary to consider whether the displacement of the brake master cylinder matches the number of pistons, otherwise excessive pistons may cause the tire to lock up. Therefore, it is necessary to do homework before modification to ensure that the vehicle is suitable for adding pistons.
